Deutsche Bahn is building new storage systems for renewable energy from old electric vehicle batteries. A first second-life storage system from DB start-up encore is currently being tested at the EUREF-Campus.

The batteries and new energy storage units are transported throughout Europe mainly by DB's logistics affiliates DB Schenker and DB Cargo. There are strict legal requirements for transporting and storing battery modules, such as labeling and temperature control during transport, which makes proper transport especially complex.

The first such battery storage was commissioned in July 2022 at the EUREF-Campus site in Berlin, where it is part of the Micro Smart Grid, a smart power grid linking various energy sources, consumers and energy storage systems. All told, 24 battery modules from six electric vehicles were installed there.

The first battery storage system is already in use at the Zorneding railway station in Bavaria, and others will go into operation at the ICE plant in Leipzig and at the hydrogen refuelling station in Tübingen.
